Here are a few tips we've picked up over the years that might stop your dream holiday turning into a nightmare:

Not all package holidays send you off to Lanzagrotti. In fact they’re perfect if you want someone else to do all the work for you.

People charge a fair whack to take professional passport photos of your baby. We think you can get by following the guidelines with a digital camera.

If you’re going on a long haul flight, look for one that fits in with your baby’s routine – night flights for example.

Babies don’t understand the concept of jet lag. You just have to live with this.

Prepare for delays. Have extra food, nappies and clothes available. Dib dib dib.

Pack one nappy for each hour you expect to be travelling.

Pack an extra top or two for yourself. Accidents can and will happen!

Feed your baby during take-off and landing to help equalise their ears. You get a boiled sweet, they get some milk. Fair deal.

Take a new toy for the flight. Wrap it up and let them open it once the plane’s up – they’ll think all their Christmases have come at once. They haven’t, obviously.

Check whether your accommodation is on one or two floors. Mediterranean villas often have steep staircases and no safety gates. Reserve any necessary high chairs and cots too.

If you’ve booked childcare, be prepared that they might not like it – especially if it’s in a non-English speaking country. Golf will just have to wait.

With toddlers, write your mobile number on some paper and put it in a zipped pocket. Alternatively you can attach a luggage label to their wrist like Paddington Bear!

Pack a night light (and travel adaptor). It’ll not only help you tiptoe around a strange room in the dark, but it’ll help your child relax when they’re nodding off.
